Luchadore Lepidoptera (Masked Monarch)

Masked Monarch is a performance persona who is in part wrestler, and part social justice advocate. Lucha libre is a Mexican wrestling genre, in which the contestants wrestle with masks on. Luchadores (“wrestlers”) have wide influences that include art and social justice issues among the poor in Mexico.

On August 13, 1961, East Berlin was beginning to be sealed off. On August 15, the border policeman Conrad Schumann was posted as a guard at Bernauer and Ruppiner Straße in East Berlin – directly at the barbed wire obstacle placed at the border. At around 4 p.m., Schumann made the iconic jump.
